Stromboli ( STROM-bə-lee, Italian: [ˈstromboli]; Sicilian: Struògnuli [ˈʂː(ɽ)wɔɲɲʊlɪ]; Ancient Greek: Στρογγύλη, romanized: Strongýlē ) is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north declension of Sicily, containing Mount Stromboli, i of the three active volcanoes in Italian republic. It is one of the eight Aeolian Islands, a volcanic arc north of Sicily. Strabo writes that people believed that this is where Aeolus lived.^[three]

The island's area is 12.6 square kilometres (4.ix sq mi),^[4] on the upper third of the volcano that is above body of water level and making an island.^[5] Its population was about 500 equally of 2016^[update].^[6] The volcano has erupted many times and is constantly active with small eruptions, often visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea, giving rise to the island's nickname "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean".^[seven]

Etymology [edit]

Its name is derived from the Ancient Greek name Strongýlē , (Στρογγύλη) which was derived from στρογγύλος ( strongýlos , "round"), afterward the volcano's round, conical appearance when seen from a distance.^{[eight] [9]}

Meridian and shape [edit]

Stromboli is an island in the Tyrrhenian Bounding main, off the northward coast of Sicily, containing Mount Stromboli, i of the three active volcanoes in Italian republic. It is one of the eight Aeolian Islands, a volcanic arc north of Sicily; these islands are besides known as the Lipari Islands.

Stromboli stands 926 g (three,038 ft) above sea level,^[two] and over 2,700 m (8,860 ft) on boilerplate above the sea flooring.^[5]

The island'south area is 12.6 square kilometres (4.nine sq mi),^[4] on the upper tertiary of the volcano that is above bounding main level and making an island.^[5]

There are three active craters at the peak. A meaning geological feature of the volcano is the Sciara del Fuoco ("stream of fire"), a big horseshoe-shaped depression created in the last xiii,000 years by several collapses on the northwestern side of the cone. Approximately 2 kilometres (one+ 1⁄four miles) northeast lies Strombolicchio, the volcanic plug remnant of the original volcano.

Volcano [edit]

Mount Stromboli has been in almost continuous eruption for the past 2,000–5,000 years;^[seven] its last serious one occurred in 1921.^[iv] A pattern of eruption is maintained in which explosions occur at the pinnacle craters, with mild to moderate eruptions of incandescent volcanic bombs, a type of tephra, at intervals ranging from minutes to hours. This pattern of Strombolian eruption, as information technology is known, is likewise observed at other volcanoes worldwide.

Eruptions from the pinnacle craters typically consequence in a few short, mild, but energetic bursts, ranging up to a few hundred meters in height, containing ash, incandescent lava fragments and rock blocks. Stromboli's action is almost exclusively explosive, but lava flows do occur at times when volcanic activity is high: an effusive eruption occurred in 2002, the first in 17 years, and again in 2003, 2007, and 2013–14. Volcanic gas emissions from this volcano are measured by a multi-component gas analyzer system, which detects pre-eruptive degassing of rising magma, improving prediction of volcanic activity.^[ten]

On 3 July 2019, ii major explosive events occurred at around 16:46 local time, alongside 20 additional modest explosive events identified by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. A hiker nearly the volcano's acme died later being struck past flying droppings when the eruption began.^{[eleven] [12] [13]} Additionally, 6 people suffered minor injuries due to the eruption.^[fourteen]

On 28 August 2019, at ten:16 local time, an explosive eruption sent a pyroclastic menstruation downwardly the volcano's northern flank and into the body of water, where it continued for several hundred meters before collapsing. The resulting ash column reached a meridian of 2,000 chiliad (6,600 ft).^[15]

Settlements [edit]

The two villages San Bartolo and San Vincenzo lie in the northeast while the smaller village Ginostra lies in the southwest.^[16] Administratively, they are one of the frazione (unit of a district and municipality) of Lipari, Messina.

Strabo writes that people believed that this is where Aeolus lived.^[3]

In the early 1900s a few thousand people inhabited the island,^[17] but after several waves of emigration the population has numbered a few hundred since the mid-1950s.^[eighteen] The population on the island was about 500 as of 2016^[update].^[6]

In add-on to Italian, a derivative of the Sicilian dialect that is chosen Aeolian is generally spoken on this and the other Aeolian islands.^[xix]
